Options Create Mubarak, Jail or Pole Hangers - Former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak who was detained to await the results of investigations of cases of corruption and violence against the state could be jailed or hanged if found guilty of ordering the murder of the protesters, according to state media on Friday (15 / 4 / 2011). Government-owned newspaper Al-Ahram quoted the Head of the Cairo Court of Appeal, Zakaria Shalash, says former President Hosni Mubarak may be executed after a trial that is expected to last at least one year.
Mubarak and his son Alaa and Gamal were detained for 15 days this week after prosecutors to prove the related acts of violence against the protesters who carried out his government during the insurgency of popular 18 days that forced Mubarak to resign on 11 February. An anti-corruption panel will begin questioning Mubarak and the two boys next week over allegations of corruption, according to the newspaper. Shalash said the testimony by former Interior Minister Mubarak government, Habib al-Adly, who also is on trial on charges of ordering the shooting of the protesters antirezim, Mubarak's minions can make it if found. Adly said that he was ordered to use violence against demonstrators by the former Egyptian leader.
"If proven, he (Mubarak) will receive the same punishment as those who carry out his orders and could be executed if it is proved that peaceful protesters were killed in a planned manner.
"Mubarak is also likely receive a sentence of life imprisonment if found no unplanned deaths of the protesters were peaceful," he added. It is estimated that about 800 people were killed in the protest to topple the veteran leader from power. "Mubarak can also be sentenced to three to five years in jail if proven that the crackdown which he commanded make disabled protesters," said Shalash.
None of the suspicions that led to arrest Mubarak has so far translated into the form of demands. Mubarak was in a hospital under police guard after suffering a second heart attack and his son were detained in prison in Cairo.
The investigation itself can last for six months, according to state television, quoting an official prosecution.
Shalash added that Mubarak might face the threat of prison sentences ranging from three to 15 years if allegations of bribery and corruption evident. Mubarak is a key demand of the Court in the protest which attracted tens of thousands of people in recent weeks, which eventually led to deadly clashes with soldiers who tried to disperse a demonstration in Cairo's. Opposition groups to stop the planned demonstration conducted on Friday after the former president and his sons were arrested.
